Roasterie pumpkinsFall on an island in the Pacific Northwest is one of my favorite times and places. Colors and flavors of fall abound, with the wild blackberries giving way to apple orchards, cider presses, hard cider, mulled cider… You get the picture!

Besides harvesting apples (we have baby trees that gave us our first basketfull this year!), fall also brings squid season. Get those rubbery over-fried rings out of your mind. Fresh and properly prepared calamari is amazingly tender and eye-rolling good, and catching them is surprisingly fun – especially with good friends and hot mulled cider with an added dash of Fireball whiskey! And clamming on the beautiful west coast of Washington. I went on my first razor clam expedition last year, and we had such a good time despite almost getting swept out into the Pacific by the huge tide! So much fun to learn new things, like the proper way to plant and pull a clam gun without breaking the clam shell and finding the “dimple” that indicates a clam buried in the sand. My repeated cries of “Oh! There’s one!” were inevitably answered with “No, that’s a rock.” Best clam chowder I ever made – and a great hint to use evaporated milk instead of heavy cream to lower fat and calories without losing even a pinch of taste.

Halloween itself will mean the main street in town being shut down and all the local businesses offering tastes and treats to the little ghouls and goblins roaming the street with friends and parents with most everyone dressing up. It’s a small town celebration of fall that’s not to be missed!

About MelissaFoxWords

Devouring two or ten books per week as a young'un, I was rationed books by my parents like most kids get rationed candy. So, of course I turned to writing to tide me over between fixes. I love to get lost in a story, whether reading or writing. Nothing is better than being drawn into a story so deeply you don't realize you're turning a page until you've reached the end, and the characters live on in your heart and mind long after the cover has been closed. I’ve lived in the suburbs of the Mid-West, desert of the Southwest, and foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Since moving to an island in the Puget Sound with my husband and dogs, I’ve learned to play a mean game of 5-stand, catch squid, clams, shrimp, and crab. Good thing I like shellfish.

  1. Halloween is the best part of the fall… I admit, I go a little bit overboard getting ready for my teen’s annual sleepover but this year I was pretty subtle.
Unlike last year, when I put out my six foot tall reaper. Muhahahawesome.

  2. I look forward to the fall colors and apples. We aren’t decorating as much anymore and since my husband is retiring soon, we are starting to pare down things, in preparation of a move. skpetal at hotmail dot com

  3. Halloween would be great if I got any trick or treaters. There are kids in the neighborhood but I guess they get enough treats these days that they don’t need to go around begging for it. I always have some just in case.

I do like pumpkin and spice flavored treats, not drinks though.

I usually take a drive to a heavily wooded area then hike looking at the colorful leaves.

  4. Hi, Melissa. The razor clam expedition sounds like a fun adventure. Since I don’t get to see the leaves change down here in Florida, my favorite part of fall is Halloween. I love decorating and dressing up. Of course, seeing all the little ones in costumes is adorable as well. Thanks so much for the chance to enter your giveaway.

  5. I love all the colors of fall leaves, the reds, golds/browns and yellows, I love the taste of pumpkin spice :)

  6. My favorite activities of fall are hay rides and haunted attractions. My favorite flavors of fall are apple and pumpkin and anything made with them.
